One Room Challenge Fall 2021: Week Three – The Porch Ceiling & Floor" loading="lazy" />
It’s week three of the One Room Challenge, and I’m really starting to feel this 8 week deadline, y’all! Hopefully, things keep progressing without any hiccups. Despite the torrential rains we had here in the lowcountry last week, I was able to get the porch power-washed in order to repaint the ceiling and prep the floor for something really fun!
I’m so in love with this moodier blue ceiling color, but I have to say, this new, ginormous outdoor fan from Kichler is absolutely the cherry on top of this porch ceiling makeover!
There was nothing necessarily “wrong” with the old fan, but you remember in last week’s ORC post I mentioned that I wanted to visually link the library with this attached porch? Well, apart from using color and pattern to do that, I think using materials that don’t necessarily read as “outdoor” will help to further the connection between the two spaces.
And not only do I love the statement-making size of this 80″ fan, but I love the satin black color and the starburst detail created by the fan blades.
This Kichler fan feels modern and chic. And while it’s wet rated and thereby perfect for this porch; it looks like it belongs in a swanky living room……which is exactly why I chose it for our this porch that is attached to our library/media room!
The before and after photos up above don’t really tell the color story very accurately. But this darker blue ceiling color is a fairly dramatic change out here.
I used the same color that I have on the walls in the library (Hunley by Duron for Sherwin Williams). But you can see how the color reads much lighter outside on the porch ceiling. Isn’t it crazy how much light affects paint colors?!
This color change really made these two spaces feel so much more connected. This porch now feels more like an extension of the library which is exactly what I was going for here.
I opted to use a roller instead of a paint sprayer because I didn’t want to do any prep work. So I cut in by hand with a 2 inch angled brush and a Handy Paint Pail. I love that these pails have a magnetic brush holder!
Once the ceiling was cut in, I popped a Handy Paint Grid into my gallon of paint and got busy rolling. These grids make rolling out a ceiling such a breeze! They are sized just perfectly to fit securely in your gallon of paint and to be used with a mini roller, which is my preferred size to use when painting a ceiling.
Using a mini roller will save your neck and arm! No cramping at all!
Two coats and she was done! And I couldn’t be happier with the new color!
I have big plans for this porch floor!!! That pretty blue tile, that is almost an exact color match to the porch ceiling color, will be used for something really fun out here (stay tuned!). And I’m planning to cover the floor with this gorgeous black and white hexagon! Y’all know how much I love a graphic punch of black and white!
But first, I need to decide on a layout!
Which layout do you like best?
